Congratulations are due to Oliver Connell, who has gained a top Burney music scholarship to Shrewsbury School following auditions last week. Oliver is pictured here (centre) with (among others) Crispian Steele-Perkins (2nd left) and Sean Wentel, one of our previous scholars.
For his audition Oliver produced a slightly jazz-leaning programme featuring his take on Bix Beiderbecke as well as his latest challenge, the amazing “Carnival of Venice” air and variations. On piano he played “Take Five” – made famous by the Dave Brubeck Quartet in 1964.
Oliver has not only led Prestfelde’s brass playing over the last two-and-a-half years, but has been a key element in the 55-strong choir, and sang a mature rendition of Schubert’s “Der Lindenbaum” to seal an impressive performance. One to watch in the years ahead!
