Celebrating European Week of Languages at Prestfelde

Celebrating European Week of Languages at Prestfelde
Ceri Vaughan-Jones

With European Day of Languages taking place on 26 September, we decided to extend the celebrations at Prestfelde and make it a whole European Week of Languages.

The European Day of Languages has been celebrated since 2001 and is an opportunity to recognise Europe’s rich linguistic and cultural diversity, while encouraging people of all ages to discover the benefits – and enjoyment – of learning languages. This year’s theme is ‘Languages unite!’

Throughout the week, our children have been exploring different European languages and cultures through a programme of activities, giving them the chance to discover new vocabulary, traditions, stories and, of course, some different foods along the way.

We began the week in Chapel before moving on to the first of a series of themed snacks, kindly provided by our caterers, Wilson Vale. Romanian honey bread was a particular hit with the children and was a delicious introduction to the week.

Across the classrooms, pupils have been getting involved in a range of creative language activities. They have been discovering new words and phrases, developing their dictionary skills and finding different ways to explore and use language. The activities have provided plenty of opportunities to ask questions, make connections and discover just how much there is to learn from the languages spoken across Europe.

The week has also been a chance to look beyond the words themselves and explore some of the cultures and traditions connected to them. By bringing languages into different areas of school life, we hope to encourage children to be curious about the world around them and confident in trying something new.

From Chapel to classrooms, creative activities to new foods, it has been a busy and enjoyable week of discovery.

What a week! And with European Day of Languages still to come on 26 September, there is plenty more to explore.
